SAN (Array) Replication

Off-site Replication for Your Critical SAN Data

Many companies have invested heavily in SAN (or high end NAS) infrastructures, but are still backing up to tape. Eliminating tape and replicating to an off-site location would be preferred, but for most organizations, high costs put this out of reach. In addition to the cost of a secondary SAN, you also need a secondary data center, switches, racks, power, and the staff to configure and monitor the SAN replication.

Backing up to tape means you are recovering your most critical data - data on your SAN - from tape in the event of a disaster. Not only is tape slow, it has a high failure rate and it is difficult, if not impossible to perform complete DR testing from tape. Even if you successfully recover your data from tapes, you may have lost 24 hours worth of data. The recovery time objective of recovering your SAN environment from tape could easily exceed 72 hours or longer.

IPR NetApp SAN Replication changes everything. IPR has a robust, state-of-the-art Business Continuity Center (BCC). At the BCC we have a highly trained staff with EMC and NetApp SAN infrastructures specifically configured for off-site replication and DR purposes. For a monthly fee, IPR provides managed replication from your SAN environment to one of the SANs located in our BCC.

Offsite SAN Data Protection:

  • Without capital investment
  • Without administration burden
  • Without needing second facility
  • 365x24x7 managed, operated and maintained data replication service
  • Fast recovery time for your replicated data over the network or delivery of a Mobile Vault to your DR site
  • Provision of optional standby fail-over servers at the BCC (IPR Assured Recovery Services)
  • DR Storage On Demand— storage dynamically grows with your production SAN growth

IPR utilizes different mechanisms for replicating SAN data. The table below summarizes the replication method used based on the type of primary SAN.
